What are prosthodontic billing services?

Prosthodontics is the dental specialty focused on restoring and replacing teeth through crowns, bridges, dentures, and implant-supported prostheses. Prosthodontic billing services handle the financial side of that care, including insurance verification, prosthodontic claims processing, and revenue cycle management. Because these restorations span multiple visits, lab work, and benefit years, accurate billing depends on replacement history, alternate benefit rules, and correct seat dates.

Why should a prosthodontic practice outsource billing services?

Prosthodontic practices face missing-tooth clauses, implant coverage limits, predetermination requirements, and lab costs that add layers beyond what general dentistry billing services typically handle. To manage that complexity, outsourced prosthodontic billing services bring specialized coding knowledge, stronger denial management for high-value restorations, and steady follow-up on multi-visit cases, so your practice keeps more of its earned revenue.

Code It Right. Get Paid Right.

Prosthodontic Coding Services

We deliver documentation-driven prosthodontic coding that matches CDT codes to the documented restoration, tooth, placement history, and applicable service date. This helps reduce coding errors, replacement denials, and payment delays.

  • Restoration Type & Material Coding

We code single crowns, pontics, and retainers according to the documented restoration type and applicable material descriptors, matching the clinical record to the CDT code before submission.

  • Removable & Interim Prosthesis Coding

We distinguish complete, partial, immediate, and interim dentures and apply appropriate CDT codes for relines, rebases, adjustments, and repairs. Routine post-delivery services are included in the prosthetic procedure and not reported separately.

  • Full-Arch Implant Prosthetic Coding

We separate abutment-supported from implant-supported crowns and fixed from removable full-arch prostheses, coding interim and final restorations so All-on-X cases are reported correctly at every stage.

  • Seat Date & Prior Placement Documentation

We verify the applicable date-of-service requirements for crowns and prostheses, document prior placement dates, and attach supporting records when needed for replacement and frequency review.

Why Prostho Practices Choose Us

Why Do Prosthodontic Practices Choose MedsDental?

MedsDental knows the replacement clauses, alternate benefits, and seat-date rules behind every crown, denture, and implant claim, and builds its prosthodontic billing services around them.

Built Around High-Value Cases. Measured by What Gets Paid.

A single prosthodontic case can span several visits, a lab invoice, and two benefit years. One missed prior placement date or an alternate benefit downgrade can turn an expected payment into a reduced payment or a denial.

MedsDental manages the full case behind every claim, connecting each visit, lab invoice, and benefit year before anything goes to the payer. We confirm replacement history and missing-tooth clauses before treatment, request predeterminations on high-value cases, phase care against annual maximums, and bill every restoration on the correct seat-date.

Once claims go out, we assign each open balance to a billing specialist, follow up on a set schedule, appeal underpayments with supporting records, and escalate aging claims well before timely filing or appeal windows close.

The result is a billing partner that treats every restoration as revenue worth protecting, through every estimate, claim, and payment.

Full-Arch Implant Billing Turnaround

Dr. Viola Murphy, DDS, prosthodontist at The Prostho Matrix Group
"Our patients used to learn their balance after the final visit. Now they review it before each phase, and our estimates finally reflect what insurance pays."

Dr. Viola Murphy, DDS

The Prostho Matrix Group

Phased Care. Predictable Payments.

THE CHALLENGE

A three-doctor prosthodontic practice was completing full-arch implant cases within a single benefit year. Patients exhausted their annual maximums early and faced unexpected balances after final seating. Implant prosthetics billing also overlooked payer-specific service-date rules, so some claims landed in the wrong benefit year, and estimates missed actual payments once other claims drew down remaining benefits.

OUR SOLUTION

Before treatment, we confirmed remaining benefits, plan-year reset dates, and each payer's service-date rule. Where clinically appropriate and agreed with the patient, care was sequenced across two benefit years, with a patient estimate and, where useful, a predetermination for each phase. Claims carried radiographs, narratives, and extraction and implant placement dates where payers required them.

Benefits verified Benefit-year phasing
Date rules applied Estimate per phase
THE RESULT

Every phase now begins with a patient estimate, and 91% of estimates land within 10% of the payer's payment. Balance disputes fell to 5%, and one checklist now covers benefits, date rules, and phasing on every full-arch case.

Our Client Success Stories

Replacement limitations, alternate benefit provisions, and phased treatment determine how prosthodontic claims are paid. Our clients explain how MedsDental manages each one before it affects reimbursement.

Dr. Brice Bernhard, DDS

Arc & Anchor Prosthodontics

"We used to learn about replacement limits from the denial, after the patient already owed the balance. MedsDental checks prior placement dates before we schedule, so patients hear the real estimate first."

5 out of 5 stars

Dr. Adele Rowe, DMD

Restauro Prosthodontics

"Downgraded crown payments used to go straight to the patient's balance because nobody had time to compare them to the plan language. MedsDental checks each one and appeals when our records support the material we billed."

5 out of 5 stars

Dr. Jamel Langosh, DDS

Axis Dental Reconstruction

"Full-arch cases span several visits and a lab invoice, and their payments used to be hard to track. Now every EOB and ERA is matched to the right case, so underpayments stand out."

Prosthodontic Billing FAQs

What Prosthodontic Practices Need to Know About Billing

Straight answers to the coverage, coding, and payment questions that come up on almost every prosthodontic case.

There's no universal date since each payer's policy decides. For crowns and bridges, some payers accept the prep date, while many require the seat date. For dentures, plans may use the final impression or delivery date. The wrong date can push a claim into the wrong benefit year or cause a denial, so we confirm the payer's rule before treatment starts.

Many plans limit replacement of crowns, bridges, and dentures, often for five years or longer, based on the prior placement date. Verify the placement date for the affected tooth or appliance with the payer and compare it with practice records. Some plans allow exceptions when a prosthesis cannot be made serviceable, but they may require supporting clinical documentation.

A missing-tooth clause may exclude benefits for replacing teeth lost before coverage began, affecting bridges, partials, dentures, or implants. Some plans waive this limitation after continuous coverage. Verify the extraction or loss date before presenting benefits, so patients understand their expected out-of-pocket cost and have time to discuss treatment phasing or financing.

Under an alternate benefit provision, the plan may reimburse a less costly covered alternative rather than the treatment performed, such as a metal crown benefit for a posterior porcelain crown. The patient may owe the difference, subject to plan and contract rules. If documentation supports the selected treatment clinically, the provider may request reconsideration.

Coverage depends on each patient's benefits and diagnosis. Dental plans may cover implants (D6010) and the full-arch prosthesis (D6114 or D6115 for fixed, and D6110 or D6111 for removable), though many limit implants. Medical may apply with a qualifying diagnosis and necessity records. That's why MedsDental verifies coverage and claim order with each payer.

Immediate dentures are usually billed on the delivery date, with extractions reported separately. Routine adjustments after delivery are often included in the denture fee for a set period. Relines follow tissue healing, and each payer decides when they're covered. Some plans count the immediate denture toward the replacement limit, so we check that before extraction day.

MedsDental verifies replacement history, alternate benefits, and benefit-year timing before treatment, so prosthodontic claims are paid as expected. Our 700+ certified billers and coders handle fixed prosthodontic billing, removable prosthodontic billing, and implant claims, with case-level reporting on what's billed, paid, and pending.

MedsDental increases collections by stopping avoidable losses before and after each claim. We verify replacement and missing-tooth clauses before treatment, request predeterminations when appropriate, include required documentation, challenge inappropriate downgrades, and review A/R weekly, supporting our 22-day average A/R.

Accurate claims. Fewer surprises. That's the MedsDental promise.
